Chapter three discusses the use of alcohol and other drugs in society. Drugs are very dangerous and can cause many different social problems in society. According to Understanding Social Problems (2011), " in the United States, two of the most dangerous and widely abused drugs are alcohol and tobacco." Alcohol in particular is dangerous to society because it is a legal drug that is easy to get your hands on. It was recently reported in a poll that 67 percent of U.S. adults drink alcohol, the highest number recorded since 1985 (Newport, 2011 as cited in Mooney). Most of the adults that drink are either heavy drinkers or binge drinkers that experience social problems such as physical, economic, psychological, and personal harm.

Alcohol abuse is a social problem that is worthy of further research because it can cause so many different problems to people that don't even drink. A few examples of alcohol abuse affecting people that don't even drink are: people that get DUIs are jeopardizing their lives as well as the lives of the drivers around them, intoxicated people may become violent towards their family members for no reason.
