Poverty is a huge social problem not only in the United States but around the entire globe. Poverty is a lack of income that can effect many aspects of everyday life including: finding proper nutrition and clean water, maintaining housing, finding good education, and being able to afford health care. According to (Chandy and Gertz, as cited in Mooney 2011), "in 2010, 15.8 percent of the world's population lived in extreme poverty- less than $1.25 a day. " With $1.25 you can barely buy a candy bar in the United States today! The disturbing part about this fact is that the distribution of wealth in the world gives the poorest half adults only one percent of the total global wealth accounted for, while the richest ten percent of adults in the world have 85 percent of global wealth (Mooney, 2011).
